Kristie Arias
(b. 1977) is a Peruvian textile artist, artistic director, university lecturer, and cultural manager. She lives and works in Lima. She has dedicated her career to researching, developing, and promoting Peruvian textile art by blending traditional craft techniques with a contemporary artistic language.Arias studied Art and Design at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, the Universidad de la Rioja in Spain, and the Byam Shaw School of Art at Central Saint Martins in the United Kingdom. She completed Fashion Management at Mod’Art Peru and specialized in textile design at the North Carolina College of Textiles in the United States.In her work, Arias combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience gained from working with artisans across Peru. She has collaborated with numerous prominent artistic and cultural institutions, including the MATE Museum and PromPerú, and served as director of the Amano Pre-Columbian Museum.Through her work, Arias revives ancient techniques, giving them new life and meaning, and integrates them into the context of contemporary art. Because of this, she is recognized as one of the key figures in Peru’s contemporary artistic and cultural scene. Kristie Arias’s works are held in many public and private collections worldwide, including the Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo and the Museo de Arte de Sinaloa in Mexico, the Fundación, Museum Jumex and The Coppel Collection in Mexico, CIFO (Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation) in the USA, the Helga de Alvear Foundation in Spain, and the Perez Art Museum Miami in the USA.
