Raphael Adjetey Adjei Mayne

(b.1983) is a Ghanaian artist known for blending traditional fabrics, Adinkra symbols, and modern pop culture motifs. He graduated from Ghanatta College of Art and Design in Accra. In his works, the artist places featureless figures in colorful, dynamic compositions. Mayne uses oil pastel, chalk, acrylic, African wax fabrics, and materials collected from the coastal regions of Ghana to create vibrant textile collages. Drawing inspiration from Ghanaian heritage and African socio-cultural experiences, he juxtaposes them with elements of contemporary aesthetics and industrial textiles. In his practice, the artist explores themes related to gender politics, social marginalization, and the differences between the African countryside and the city.Mayne has exhibited internationally at AKAA Paris, Investec Cape Town Art Fair, 1 54 New York, Art Market San Francisco, Art on Paper New York, and Sydney Contemporary. His painting depicting Barack Obama and Kehinde Wiley was part of the landmark exhibition When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town. Mayne's works are part of the collection at MuCEM in Marseille and Harvard University.
