Innocent Nkuruniza
is a Rwandan painter and sculptor, recognized as one of the leading contemporary African artists. He founded the Inema Arts Center, an educational and art space for children and young people that hosts exhibitions and performances. He also initiated Rwanda’s first art collective, Nziza Art Initiative. The artist is known for monumental works that combine various techniques. He uses natural materials such as tree bark, mud, and dirt, and makes his own pigments. He describes his creative process as “slow art” – focused, and meditative ritual. In his view, art is a form of spiritual connection with nature, a prayer, and a way to rediscover the primal bond between humans and the earth. Nkurunziza draws inspiration from the earliest artistic expressions of humankind, such as rock paintings and handprints, which he sees as forms of prayer, incantation, and expression of original unity with nature. His works resemble landscapes, dried riverbeds, solidified lava, and the fingerprints of the earth. Nkurunziza's work has gained international recognition. His pieces are part of many private and museum collections, and the artist frequently participates in exhibitions and art fairs across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The Inema Art Center, which he co-manages with his brother Emmanuel, has become a key gathering spot for artists and international visitors to Kigali, including heads of state and diplomats. Through his artistic and educational work, he has helped change Rwanda's image from a country associated with tragedy to one of creativity, spirituality, and healing through art.
