Kwaku Yaro
Kwaku Yaro (b. 1995) is a Ghanaian visual artist. Born and raised in Labadi – a coastal fishing community in Accra – Yaro transforms found waste materials into intricately crafted portraits, elevating them into multidimensional narratives.
His works combine fragments of plastic mats, used bags, and colorful fabrics with traditional acrylic painting. The use of materials characteristic of the Ghanaian landscape carries a story of community and national identity, while also referencing the artist’s personal experiences. His distinctive style merges pointillism with collage and traditional craftsmanship. Yaro applies hundreds of tiny dots onto a plastic surface, forming a vivid, collective portrait.
Yaro is a member of Artemartis, a collective of young contemporary artists. He has participated in numerous exhibitions, including at Septieme Gallery in Paris, Gallery 1957 in Accra, Untitled Miami in 2024, and Pearl Lam Gallery in Hong Kong. His works are held in public collections such as The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., as well as in private collections in Ghana, Poland, the United Kingdom, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Côte d’Ivoire.
